OITNB's Laverne Cox
May 2, 2016
We are pleased to co-sponsor the appearance of Laverne Cox, activist and star of Orange is the New Black, as the 2016 Power of Inclusion Speaker. On Tuesday, May 10th at 6pm, Ms. Cox will speak to a full-house at the Mandell Theater (3201 Chestnut Street). Ms. Cox’s career has been a series of firsts- she is the first transgender actress featured on the cover of TIME Magazine and the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show, Orange is the New Black. She is a SAG Award winner, Emmy Nominee, Critic’s Choice nominee, and NACP Image Awards nominee. In addition to a prolific performing career, Ms. Cox is also a prominent equal rights advocate. With her work on the documentary, Free CeCe, she continues to be a voice for establishing transgender awareness and equality.
With an underlying goal of inclusion for all students, CAB’s Lectures & Diversity Committee focuses to enrich Drexel’s academic environment through intellectually diverse events that stimulate thought and engagement. Tickets for this event are no longer available. All proceeds of this event will benefit The Attic Youth Center, a Philadelphia nonprofit organization that creates opportunities for LGBTQ youth to develop into healthy, independent, civic-minded adults and promotes the acceptance of LGBTQ youth in society.
